The aim of this multidisciplinary meeting is to bring together physicists and biologists to discuss experimental and theoretical approaches for studying behaviour in living systems. Speakers will combine an introduction aimed at a broad audience with results from their latest research. Topics covered will include search strategies and foraging, simplicity underlying complexity, sensing and migration, and decision-making. These topics span multiple scales from single cells and individuals to collectives.

From the big bang and inflation to supernovae and black holes, the most violent events in the Universe are the most exciting. Streaming across space, the messengers from these cataclysmic events may yet hold the keys to unlocking the deepest secrets of nature.The next few years, driven by experimental advances, a revolution in our understanding of the cosmos can be confidently predicted. Gravitational waves will be detected, opening an entirely new window on the Universe. The next generation of dark matter searches are reaching the sensitivity at which theory predicts a signal may be seen. Very high energy gamma ray astronomy will be transformed by the building of the Cerenkov Telescope Array. Collectively and coherently, these will provide unprecedented access to the physics in the most extreme of environments. Welcome to Astroparticle Physics!

Numerical simulation has seen spectacular progress with the advent of faster and cheaper computing power. However, such computations require detailed material models for which parameters have to be identified experimentally.

The interaction of ion beams with solid surfaces generates a large amount of analytical information. A number of techniques, based on such interactions, for example SIMS, LEIS, FIB, RBS and PIXE, are used in materials science to elucidate compositional information. This workshop will review these techniques and the range of applications to which they are put.
